Total demolition at World Cup. Portugal edged closer to qualify for the next stage after defeating North Korea 7-0.

Ronaldo scored a goal on the 87th minute, which is amazingly his first international goal in two years. Hope there’s more to come.

Ronaldo backs Rooney to improve

Ronaldo has defended Wayne Rooney over criticism of his World Cup displays and backed his former Manchester United team-mate to improve.

Rooney has been well below his best in England’s disappointing draws with the USA and Algeria.

But Ronaldo said: “Wayne Rooney tried very hard, but he didn’t play alone.

“When it’s not coming, when you don’t score a goal or play well, it is always the big players’ fault. But Wayne is a great player and will do a good job.”

Portugal star Ronaldo played with Rooney at United for five seasons, winning three league titles and the Champions League before leaving to join Real Madrid in 2009. [Source]

Good to see Ronaldo helping his old pal, but he has his own problem to be concerned of. His form hasn’t been impressive, and Portugal need him to step up to advance further in the World Cup.

Ronaldo: Portugal among favourites

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo believes that despite a disappointing qualifying campaign his side are among the favourites to lift the World Cup.

“There are six teams that can win the World Cup,” Ronaldo told Sport magazine. “And I would say that Portugal are definitely one of them.

“We have a great team with a lot of potential, but we have disappointed in the qualification. I’m sure that not many people expect much from us, but we can use that in a positive way.”

Portugal have been drawn in Group G alongside Brazil, Ivory Coast and North Korea.

Ronaldo saving goals for World Cup

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo insists he is not worried about his international goal drought and promised that he is saving his scoring exploits for this summer’s World Cup finals.

Ronaldo failed to shine during qualifying and Portugal struggled through their group, finishing second behind Denmark, before edging past Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-offs to secure a finals berth.

Many have suggested that coach Carlos Queiroz’s decision to make Ronaldo captain has burdened the world’s most expensive player, and the evidence appears to back up that feeling.

Ronaldo failed to score a single goal in qualifying – with his last competitive goal coming in the group stage of Euro 2008 in a 3-1 win against the Czech Republic – as Querioz’s side scraped through unconvincingly to the finals.

But a typically confident Ronaldo insisted he is unconcerned by his lack of goals, suggesting that he is waiting for the biggest stage of them all to prove his international scoring credentials.

“It’s not a problem,” Ronaldo said. “I’m saving myself for the World Cup.”

Injured Ronaldo included in Portugal squad

Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in the Portugal squad for their World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Real Madrid forward faces a race to be fit for the two games on November 14 and 18 as he has an ankle injury. Medical reports from the Primera Division side yesterday confirmed he would be out of action for at least two more weeks.

Ronaldo has missed Madrid’s last eight matches after suffering an injury to his right ankle during the Champions League match with Marseille on September 30, and then aggravating it while playing for Portugal in their World Cup qualifier against Hungary on October 10.
