Ronaldo kept his nerved to covert a penalty on 33rd minute after Wayne Rooney was fouled in the box. Giggs, introduced on the 68th minute for his 758th United appearance, has equalled the record by Sir Bobby Charlton… and there would be no better way to celebrate that milestone by scoring a goal in the 80th minute.

A remarkable season for Manchester United, a great season for Ronaldo, but it’s not over yet. There is one more game to go on May 21… the Champions League final in Moscow.

The Reds winger topped the journalists’ poll ahead of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, while Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes were third and fourth in the voting.

Ronaldo will receive the trophy at the FWA Footballer of the Year dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on May 17.

Ronaldo became the first player to win both awards in the same year since Andy Gray in 1977; Ronaldo received his awards at a gala dinner in London on Sunday night (April 22).

Ronaldo has always been the favourite; his only real competitor for Player of the Year was Chelsea’s Didier Drogba, who is 2nd on the list, while Ronaldo’s Manchester United team mate Paul Scholes in 3rd.

The 2nd place for young players is Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas; Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon 3rd.

Manchester United also have a strong hold for PFA Premier League Team of the Year, filling 8 out of 11 spots. It will be quite an ironic if Chelsea wins the Premier League and FA Cup in the end, with only one player in the Team of the Year… touch wood.

The Welsh winger is a shining example of how to consistently perform at the highest level and has challenged his team-mate to maintain his “unbelievable” performances for the next ten years.

“It is great news for the club, Cristiano and the fans,” said Giggs after hearing that Ronaldo had signed a new contract until 2012.

“He’s been on fire this season, his form has been unbelievable. For someone in his position and of his age to be as consistent as he has been is remarkable.”

Giggs is confident United have secured the services of a special player who can still get better.

United will meet AC Milan or Bayern Munich in their first semi-final since 2002.

Roma with the 2-1 lead from first leg in Rome, started brightly and looked more likely to open the scoreline at Old Trafford. Francesco Totti was just a feet away from finding the net, but United kept its nerve and soon… things changed.
