AS Roma clinched a 2-1 victory against Manchester United at Stadio Olimpico in the Champions League quarter final first leg match.

Manchester United won’t be too disappointed with the result, as they had to play with 10 men most of the time, with Paul Scholes being sent off in 34th minute. United also got a crucial away goal through Wayne Rooney, his first Champions League goal since his debut hattrick against Fenerbahce in September 2004.

AS Roma dominated the game from the start; United players seemed a bit nervy, and couldn’t play to the tempo they usually preferred in Premier League. The sent off of Scholes only made thing worse, as United had to battle hard, hoping that they could manage to hang on until half time.

The luck was not on United side though, as Rodrigo Taddei scored just minutes before half time.

Roma continued to push forward in the 2nd half, but despite their domination, they couldn’t find the net.

Instead, it’s Manchester United that managed to equalize in the 60th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo with a great run from his own half before making a superb pass to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Solskjaer didn’t waste Ronaldo’s effort, and lifted a pin-point cross to Rooney, who kept his composure to find the net.

The scoreline only stood for 6 minutes though, as AS Roma took the lead again with substitute Mirko Vucinic.

Roma continued to press forward, but Manchester United managed to hang on to the 1-2 defeat. AS Roma the deserving winner in the end, but they could be disappointed for the small margin victory despite their dominance and the man advantage.

It’s a good match, but it was tainted with crowd trouble which saw some United fans being beaten by riot police. UEFA have announced they will launch an investigation into the incident.
